Duane Michals
Duane Michals is an American self-taught photographer. Michals is interested in the things he can’t capture with a camera. He is greatly influenced by the surrealists, and his pictures – black and white, mostly – often have a dreamlike, poetic quality. They are naive, in the sense that they look like old-fashioned photographs. The effects he applies are those of early photographers. But they are not childish, because Michals often talks about ‘big’ themes: death, love, family, spirituality. Michals creates photo-sequences and one of the sequences are called 'Chance Meeting' featured below. This is about two men meeting for a second and walking on but they both look back as if they know each other but at different times so we are not sure if they do know each other.
My Photo-sequence
For my photo-sequences I decided to go in an opposite direction to how Michals creates his sequences. I shot my images in black and white to help them be in more of a sequence. My images don't run completely straight after each other like Michals do but you can still get the story from them. The story I was going for is two friends meeting up to go out the opposite to just two strangers meeting for a second on the street.
